The purpose of this page is to help you prepare for classes and to structure your class. This is especially for new catechists or those who may not already have a classroom structure.

Prepare Ahead of Time
Things flow more smoothly if you prepare ahead of time. Often, this won't take a lot of time. The weekend before is usually a good time to do this. Sunday may be a good day to give a little extra time to God to do this. Here are some key things to consider:

Read the lesson plan on the web page to know what should be covered.
Read the material in the book (if we are using a book that day).
Look up more info on the topic such as videos or other books.
Read up on the saint for the day so that you could tell the story of the saint yourself.
Choose handouts that you think would be appropriate for your class. You can send an email to the office for them to print things out for you if you do it early enough.

A Typical Class Structure
It is always a challenge to fit everything into one class. There is so much the students need to learn! The following structure works well for me and the material we need to cover. Be careful not to spend too much time on one thing.

Get the students settled. A worksheet can be helpful, if it is simple. Briefly tell them what the class today is about or what they should expect to learn.
Pray the memorized prayers. Start with a good Sign of the Cross and end with one. The prayers can be all of the prayers they need to memorized or just the ones that have been presented so far.
If there is a new prayer to learn, go over it now. Be sure to tell them where the prayer came from (if applicable), the purpose of the prayer, and go over the prayer and what it means, explaining words as needed.
Cover the lesson material.
Go over the saint of the day. If time is short, tell the story. Reading always takes longer. If you have lots of time, you could act out some saint's stories.
Close with a prayer. Use this time to teach them that there are many ways to pray. Here are some ideas:
- Prayers of petitions. Structure it like the Sunday prayers of the faithful. Start it off and have the students say what they want to pray for, one at a time.
- Prayers of thanksgiving. As above but let everyone say something they are thankful for. If they say the same thing as someone else, that is ok.
- Prayers of praise. As above but something wonderful about God.
- Meditation prayer. Tell the students to close their eyes after the sign of the cross and walk them through an encounter with Jesus.
- Prayer in song. If you have audio or can sing well, start with the sign of the cross and try to get everyone to sing.
- I am sure I am not thinking of all the options here. What else can you come up with? Praying with our bodies?

Birthdays or other special events for an individual
It is a good idea to celebrate birthsays and other events in your students lives, such as a new baby, etc. For birthdays, there are many options that do not take much time. you could have a special birthday pin or something to set on thir desk. After the starting prayer, you can tell the class that the student has a birthday this week and ask them how old they are and if they have plans or such. Then tell all the students to extend their hands over hime and say a short birthday blessing. You can also do a special blessing for other events in your students lives that they tell you about.

Handling Problem Students
Unfortunately, I don't have any good ideas for handling problem students. Each one is different so each one needs a unique solution. Some students cannot behave when they are sitting next to a particular other student so the solution is to not let them sti together. Some students can't sit still so put them at the back of the class so they at least don't disturb as many other students. Some students work better if they always have something to do so having a picture to color, or doodle or a maze that they can do in the background can be helpful. It should be something that does not require too much thought. Sometimes giving that person something specific to do helps. They may need to read the next section out loud or be prepared to do something with the next section of the lesson.

Prepárese con anticipación

Estructura típica de una clase
Siempre es un reto integrar todo en una sola clase. ¡Hay tanto que los estudiantes necesitan aprender! La siguiente estructura me funciona bien y se adapta al material que necesitamos cubrir. Cuidado de no dedicar demasiado tiempo a una sola cosa.

Organiza a los estudiantes. Una hoja de trabajo puede ser útil, si es sencilla. Explícales brevemente de qué se trata la clase de hoy o qué deben esperar aprender.
Recen las oraciones memorizadas. Comienzan con una buena señal de la cruz y terminan con una. Las oraciones pueden ser todas las oraciones que necesitan memorizar o solo las que se han presentado hasta ahora.
Si hay una nueva oración que aprender, revísala ahora. Asegúrate de explicarles de dónde proviene (si corresponde), su propósito y repasa la oración y su significado, explicando las palabras según sea necesario.
Cubre el material de la lección.
Repasen el santo del día. Si el tiempo es limitado, cuenten la historia. Leer siempre lleva más tiempo. Si tienen mucho tiempo, podrían dramatizar las historias de algún santo.
Cierren con una oración. Aprovechen este tiempo para enseñarles que hay muchas maneras de orar. Aquí tienen algunas ideas:
- Oraciones de petición. Estructúrenlas como las oraciones dominicales de los fieles. Comience y pida a los alumnos que digan lo que quieren pedir, uno a la vez.
- Oraciones de acción de gracias. Igual que la anterior, pero que cada uno diga algo por lo que esté agradecido. Si dicen lo mismo que alguien más, está bien.
- Oraciones de alabanza. Igual que la anterior, pero algo maravilloso sobre Dios.
- Oración de meditación. Pidan a los alumnos que cierren los ojos después de la señal de la cruz y guíenlos a través de un encuentro con Jesús.
- Oración con canto. Si tienen audio o cantan bien, comiencen con la señal de la cruz e intenten que todos canten.
- Estoy seguro de que no estoy pensando en todas las opciones. ¿Qué más se te ocurre? ¿Rezar con el cuerpo?

Cumpleaños u otros eventos especiales para una persona
Es buena idea celebrar los cumpleaños y otros eventos en la vida de sus estudiantes, como un nacimiento, etc. Para los cumpleaños, hay muchas opciones que no requieren mucho tiempo. Podrías tener un broche especial de cumpleaños o algo para colocar en su escritorio. Después de la oración inicial, puede decirle a la clase que el estudiante cumple años esta semana y preguntarles cuántos años tiene y si tienen planes o algo similar. Luego, pide a todos los estudiantes que extiendan sus manos sobre él y digan una breve bendición de cumpleaños. También puede hacer una bendición especial para otros eventos en la vida de sus estudiantes que le cuenten.

Cómo manejar a los estudiantes problemáticos
Lamentablemente, no tengo buenas ideas para manejar a los estudiantes problemáticos. Cada uno es diferente, así que cada uno necesita una solución única. Algunos estudiantes no se comportan bien cuando están sentados al lado de otro, así que la solución es no dejar que se queden quietos. Algunos estudiantes no pueden quedarse quietos, así que colóquelos al fondo de la clase para que al menos no molesten tanto a los demás. Algunos estudiantes trabajan mejor si siempre tienen algo que hacer, así que tener un dibujo para colorear, dibujar o un laberinto que puedan resolver de fondo puede ser útil. Debe ser algo que no requiera mucha reflexión. A veces, darle a esa persona algo específico que hacer ayuda. Quizás necesiten leer la siguiente sección en voz alta o estar preparados para hacer algo con la siguiente sección de la lección.
