Overview / Descripción General
The first day of class tends to be somewhat chaotic. Students are trying to find their class, the office is handling last minute registrations,
and any other number of details that need to be figured out.
The best plan for this first day is to start getting to know the students in your class.
Make sure they can make a good Sign of the Cross.
Find out what they know from last year or even outside of CCD and start setting the classroom expectations.
Below are some ideas. These can be done in just about any order.
There are many ideas here. Many of them can be done next week. Don't feel all of this needs to be done on this first week.
El primer día de clases suele ser un poco caótico. Los estudiantes intentan encontrar su clase,

An Idea for Class Flow / Una idea para el desarrollo de la clase
- Have 1 or 2 activity sheets on everyones desk for them to start working on as they arrive and while you may be handling new student issues.

- Introduce yourself
- Start with a simple prayer.
- Talk about the sign of the Cross and practice it slowly and in depth. (See Prayer below.)
- Talk about what prayer is and how they are expected to behave during prayer. (Also in Prayer below.)
- Remind students to go to Mass every Sunday. (See Mass Related Activities" below.)
- Take attendance.
- Talk a bit about what we will be doing this year. (See Overview for the Year below.)
- Talk about classroom rules. See Rules below.
- Play games, if there is time. (See Pictures, Games and Activity Sheets below.)
- Closing prayer

The Year in Review / Resumen del año
This year the students will be preparing to receive 2 sacraments: Reconciliation (also called Confession or Penance), and Communion (also called Eucharist).
You may want to quickly go over the basic things we will be covering this year.
Este año, los estudiantes se prepararán para recibir dos sacramentos: la Reconciliación (también llamada Confesión o Penitencia) y la Comunión
(también llamada Eucaristía).

- They will need to know about all 7 of the sacraments, especially those 2.
- They will need to memorize the basic prayers. There are 7 of them.
- They will need to memorize the 10 commandments and the 7 Sacraments.
- They will learn about the Last Supper and the Paschal Mystery.
- They will hear stories of Saints so that they can be a Saint.
- They will learn how to use the Bible.
- They will learn about the Mass.
There is a lot to memorize and a lot to understand. They will need to spend time on their prayers daily and go to Mass weekly.
Most importantly, they should start a relationship with Jesus.
Resumen del año
Este año los estudiantes se prepararán para recibir 2 sacramentos: Reconciliación (también llamada Confesión o Penitencia), y Comunión (también llamada Eucaristía).
- Necesitarán conocer los 7 sacramentos, especialmente esos 2.
- Necesitarán memorizar las oraciones básicas, 7 de ellas.
- Necesitarán memorizar los 10 mandamientos y los 7 sacramentos.
- Aprenderán sobre la última cena y el misterio Pascual.
- Escucharán historias de santos para que puedan ser santo.
- Aprenderán a usar la Biblia.
- Aprenderán sobre la Misa.
Hay mucho que memorizar y mucho que entender. Tendrán que dedicar tiempo a la oración diaria e ir a Misa semanalmente.
Lo más importante es que deben iniciar una relación con Jesús.
Prayer / Oración
This year, we are using a different prayer book. The goal is to use it in the classroom to say the
prayers each class and for the students to take it home for daily prayers and to use to follow the Mass.
This requires that they do not lose it and do not forget it.
Make sure they know the proper way to make the Sign of the Cross, what it means and why it is important.
Este año, usamos un libro de oración diferente. El objetivo es usarlo en el aula para rezar las oraciones
de cada clase y que los alumnos lo lleven a casa para sus oraciones diarias y para después de la Misa.
Esto requiere que no lo pierdan ni lo olviden.

Rules / Reglas
If you feel you need printed rules for your class, there are some ideas here. Generally, I have found there are rules on the boards in the
classroom that work and are then always visible. Also, the students have the same rules at school and so on, so giving them rules isn't needed.
